Off Beat
Scholar
Writing Workshops
A service to families that will guide preadolescent, adolescent and teenagers to articulate and refine their ideas and opinions in a venue that will allow them to be heard -- OffBeatScholar is an arena where young people will discover the impact of their own authored words. Each conference is an opportunity to share among peers as professionals.
OffBeatScholar can be the medium for parents and young individuals, where parents are assured that their children are in a guided environment among peers, and at the same time where the children feel that they have a modicum of autonomy and privacy from their parents.
The key is to prove that they are worthy of a legitimate voice. The educational environment rewards and acknowledges students for their fulfillment of academic assignments and projects. But students in all the developmental stages are not offered the opportunity to learn to think independently. There is a keen difference between addressing the requirements of pre-college course work and the acquisition of discernment and a natural exposure to different perspectives.
There are few opportunities within a school day to socialize with peers and friends. At the same time parents are wary of their childrens' peers. There is mounting restlessness and frustration among adolescents who do not drive because they have very little control over their life outside of school.
